The Aviation Studies Institute has been shortlisted for an industry award at the Air Traffic Management Awards 2023 in the category of ‘Resilience in ATM’.
The shortlisting is a recognition of the institute’s recent work developing a solution for resilience to meteorological disruptions and unforeseen events.
It places the institute in the final round, up against several well-established industry organisations: Airways (New Zealand), ENAIR (Spain), ENAV (Italy), Eurocontrol Network Manager (Belgium) and the European Satellite Services Provider (France and Spain).
The Aviation Studies Institute’s research and development has been conducted over the last two years to develop an optimisation tool. This enables air traffic controllers to understand the capacity impact of a disruptive event (such as weather) in the skies around an airfield, and to what extent the air traffic controller’s actions can reduce that impact.
The work has been matured from initial inception and development of mathematical formulae, through to the creation of optimisation algorithms, and more recently a software prototype. The prototype includes an intuitive user interface designed for use on the fly by analysts and air traffic controllers. The work has been conducted through the institute’s Resilient Airspace project (https://asi.sutd.edu.sg/research-projects/resilient-airspace/) and supported by the Translational Research project (https://asi.sutd.edu.sg/research-projects/translational-research/).
The winners will be announced on the 19th of March 2024 in Geneva.
