The Aviation Studies Institute (ASI) has published the sixth white paper in its series. The paper looks at the opportunities in Southeast Asia for Passenger Inter-modality between Air Travel and Rail, and the impact of High-Speed Rail upon the air travel in the region.

Recent investments in some parts of the region show a renewed interest in rail transport – particularly high-speed rail. There are also several visions of an expansive cross-border rail network integrating rail travel across multiple countries. Where does this leave aviation in the region and are there opportunities for both forms of transport to complement one another.

The paper highlights several rail transport investments within the region, and highlights gaps and opportunities to connect rail with aviation.

The white paper forms the second of a two-part analysis that considers the broader integration of transport connectivity in Southeast Asia. The first part was published in January 2024.

The paper is available for download on the Resources section of the website. A direct link is here: ASI White Paper – Southeast Asia for Passenger Inter-modality between Air Travel and Rail.

The paper follows previous publications in the white paper series. These look at the future of ‘super short-haul’ air transport in Southeast Asia, the future of ASEAN Hub airports, airport slot allocation policies during the recovery from COVID-19 and future concepts of operation within air traffic management.
